Artist Statement
For the past five years I have taught photography to high school students. Previously I spent three years teaching elementary school art. My female students of all ages are the inspiration for my current body of work. “Sugar and spice and everything nice, that’s what little girls are made of.” This quote is resurfaces in my mind continually as I build my current body of work. Candy sure is yummy, but there’s not a whole lot of substance to it. My Little Pony sure is cute and I see high school girls promenading through the hall with the same coy look as the child’s toy. Don’t get me wrong “yummy” and “cute” are the spice of life, but it makes me sad to think that a lot of girls don’t know there’s so much more.
