Gems of the West: Glimpses of Reality – Pigment Transfer Prints

Because of Covid19, I made the choice to transition from landscape photography to printmaking. The images that I use for these prints are from my photographs and my studio mate’s scanned thumbnail sketches. These images are all altered and refined in digital image programs. These prints are a series called “Gems of the West: Glimpses of Reality.”

Katie Hoffman    Monotypes

Monotypes created by Katie Hoffman between 2017 and 2022. Monotypes are Printmaking’s unruly cousin; one-of-a-kind creations with a general disregard for rules and regulations. At least, that’s my story. And I’m sticking to it.

Travis Vermilye     Bound

Bound is a project that examines, explores, and reflects on the complex underground networks that bind the soil, fungi, and plant life together. Vast mycelium networks occupy the space beneath the surface of nearly every natural area we humans inhabit. In many cases, organisms are dependent on these networks for nutrients and also for a special type of biological communication between various species. Life as we know it, quite literally, could not exist without them. This project is my way of paying homage.

Bound consists of six physical pieces that simultaneously exist in the digital realm as augmented reality experiences as well as carbon neutral NFTs.

A Tribute: Works by Jon Teivlle 1931 – 2021

Statement from Sue Crosby Doyle and Terry Decker

Our neighbor and friend Jon Teivlle passed away on December 19th 2021, at the age of ninety years. Little did we know that she was an outsider artist who had been painting for over 50 years. She had a collection of her work dating back to the 1960’s. This is a curated show of her work. All proceeds from the sale of her work will be donated to the Cat Care Society.

Sue Crosby Doyle is an EDGE Gallery Member and is using her exhibition slot for this special exhibition.

Juror André Lippard  reflects on his selection process for the exposition: “When I was asked to jury this show, The Road Less Traveled, I was focused on work that not only evoked a sentiment, either literal or metaphorical, but displayed a high quality in technique.  My motto has always been “art should speak for itself” and I applied that to this selection.  There were so many great pieces to choose from, in the end I feel my selections combined may speak to each other as well as the audience.”

Gayla Lemke    Light and Dark: Circadian Rhythms
“As Night Flows into Day”

As we move into the darker days of winter, the importance of light and of embracing the contrast inherent in life becomes more apparent. Yin and yang, light and dark, sorrow and joy…the balance of opposites…internal rhythms and universal rhythms…these are the things that inspired this work.

Mark Ferrell    Unsolved Mysteries
“Plague Effigy” 2021 Oil Paint on Canvas 48’’ X 60”

My show is titled ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ because I’m a fan of the show, but it also is a good description of my paintings. This isn’t to say that I think these paintings are unresolved- on the contrary, I scrutinized these paintings quite a bit. Like the TV show, though, my works (based on photographs of the suburbs I grew up in) are both reflective of reality, but also reference the supernatural. I think this illustrates what I prefer painting to be, a dichotomy between drawing from what we see while acknowledging the spiritual trail left by an artists’ hand (what some would call sense of touch). These paintings are also a form of wish fulfillment, taking my sometimes isolated environment and adding what I wish to see in them.

Travis Vermilye  Sporangia
“Hemitrichia Calyculata”

The natural world and a lifelong attraction to the beauty and wonder of tiny life forms viewed through a magnification lens inspire my work. Through digital composite images and short animated film, I aim to capture the wondrous joy of childlike discovery and exploration of the natural world and present this, best that I can, as it appears in my memory and imagination. The pieces exhibited here draw inspiration, sometimes very directly, from the fantastically surreal forms found in the fruiting bodies of molds and slime molds.
